Lionel Messi tied Miroslav Klose’s all-time men’s World Cup goal record of 16 with a hat-trick vs Algeria on Matchday 1 (Al Jazeera, 2026-06-21). Today, against Austria at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, kickoff 1:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM CT / 10:00 AM PT, he needs one to break it. Argentina — top of Group J and one win from securing their place in the Round of 32 — are unbeaten on an eight-match winning run, and the market is reading this as Messi by one or two.

Pablo Aimar, Argentina’s assistant coach, told Al Jazeera ahead of the match: "Austria is a very tough team, as we’re seeing with the vast majority of the teams participating in this World Cup."

What if Austria block him?

If Messi is held to 16 today, the record-breaking chase runs into Matchday 3 vs Jordan — which is still in the group stage, and which will be a much shorter Argentina price.
The cleanest "Austria block him" read: Argentina to win 1-0 or first goalscorer not Messi (Julián Álvarez or Lautaro Martínez are the obvious props). Either is a legitimate hedge.
What to remember
