The history: back-to-back, and a 72-year wait
Lionel Scaloni’s holders would be the first back-to-back World Cup winners since Brazil (1958 and 1962) if they lift it again on 19 July. Messi is already the all-time World Cup goal leader with 21, and his 8 this tournament co-lead the Golden Boot race with Mbappé. Argentina have found ways through so far — 3–2 over Cape Verde in the Round of 32 and then 3–2 over Egypt in the R16, both late comebacks. They have also conceded in each of their last three matches, and the defence looks shaky.
Murat Yakin’s Switzerland arrived here on grit. Unbeaten in their group, both knockout wins with zero goals conceded in regulation, and a penalty shootout over Colombia in the Round of 16 to break a 72-year quarter-final drought. The H2H against Argentina is punishing — five wins and two draws in seven all-comps for Argentina, no losses — and the two sides have met at a World Cup twice, both Argentina wins (1966 2–0, and the 2014 Round of 16, 1–0 on Ángel Di María’s 118th-minute finish from a Messi pass). Switzerland have literally never beaten Argentina.

That is close to opening-only pricing across recorded books, so treat the numbers as a range and shop for the underdog side if you’re taking it.
Angles I’m looking at rather than the moneyline:
- Messi anytime scorer. Eight in the tournament. Argentina’s most reliable route to a decisive goal, and probably priced short.
- Switzerland “match to reach extra time” / draw at 90. The Swiss defence has been outstanding in the knockouts — no goals conceded in regulation across both rounds. If they can drag this level, penalties are their comfort zone.
- Over 2.5 goals if you think Argentina’s shakier defence gives Switzerland a route back after conceding.
- Kobel to make X+ saves. He was the R16 hero — if the game plays to script and Argentina control possession, the Swiss keeper will be busy.
Absences and rotation
Argentina: Gonzalo Montiel is fit but on a semi-final ban risk — he was booked vs Egypt and is likely rested for the QF to avoid a second yellow. Rest of the squad, no fresh injury concerns reported.
Switzerland: Johan Manzambi is a doubt with a knee issue (missed the R16 vs Colombia). Two further Swiss injury doubts — Luca Jaquez and Michel Aebischer — appear on ESPN’s injury summary but only from a single source, so treat them as unconfirmed. Xhaka, Zakaria and Muheim each carry a yellow into the QF and are one booking away from an SF ban.
Kansas City weather and Arrowhead
Arrowhead Stadium is open-air with an open pitch. NWS Kansas City’s ~1-day-out forecast for Saturday evening has ~75–80°F at kickoff (day high ~87°F), mostly cloudy clearing to mostly clear by evening, ~30% storm chance mainly early afternoon that eases by kickoff, wind light east at ~5–6 mph. Mild and calm for a summer evening in the Midwest — probably the friendliest conditions of the three Saturday-double-header slots.
The Canadian read
Argentina fandom in Canada is real — large Argentine communities in Toronto and Montréal, plus a big neutral audience that adopted Messi in Qatar 2022. 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT is a properly friendly slot: prime time in the East, early evening watch on the West Coast, and comfortable for the Prairies. The whole quarter-final weekend is on CTV free-to-air in English, alongside TSN in English and RDS in French — you don’t need a subscription to see any of it.
The story lines are good ones either way. Messi’s decisive World Cup game may still be to come; a Switzerland win over Argentina would be the biggest upset since Norway beat Brazil last weekend, and given that Norway-England is the earlier Saturday QF, a Norway/Switzerland weekend would rewrite the semi-final feel entirely.
My read
Argentina should win this. The H2H is one-sided; Messi is in Golden Boot form; and while the Argentine defence has looked porous, Switzerland aren’t set up to punish teams with volume of chances. But Yakin’s side have been the tournament’s stubbornest defensive unit and a shoot-out result would be a coin flip. My honest number: Argentina to advance ~65–70%, but 1.80 (90 min) is closer to fair than sharp. If you want a side bet, Switzerland double chance at whatever the number is worth a look, and Messi anytime scorer is the volume favourite play. Argentina’s back-to-back path continues — probably tight, possibly through extra time.
