Switzerland vs Algeria at BC Place — the team that beat Canada, back in Vancouver
There’s a personal edge to this one, and a Canadian one. Switzerland vs Algeria, Round of 32, BC Place, 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT on Thursday 2 July — the late game on the card, primetime on the West Coast — brings back to Vancouver the Swiss side that beat Canada 2–1 in the group stage. Plenty of fans in BC will be tuning in with a specific hope: to see whether the team that ended part of the CanMNT dream can be made to sweat. Standing in Switzerland’s way is Algeria, and their coach has a score of his own to settle.

The subplot: Petković against the team he built
Algeria are coached by Vladimir Petković, who managed Switzerland for seven years — the man who shaped much of the core that Murat Yakin now sends out. Now he’s on the other bench, aiming to knock out the side he built. It is the kind of storyline that writes itself, and it gives a first-ever competitive meeting between these two nations real weight. Add the fact that Algeria scraped through as a third-placed team after a wild 3–3 with Austria on the final group matchday, and you have a team playing with house money against a Swiss side that topped its group.
Form and fitness
Switzerland won Group B with seven points, that 2–1 over Canada included, and arrive fully fit — Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler and Ardon Jashari all available, with Johan Manzambi (three goals and an assist in the group) the breakout name. That’s a settled, experienced tournament team.
Algeria sit on the other end of the momentum scale: through on four points, but with Mohamed El Amine Amoura a serious doubt (thigh/hamstring, described as a race to be fit) as of 2 July. Riyad Mahrez and Amine Gouiri lead the line, and Algeria’s threat is real on the counter — but losing Amoura would blunt them. (Statuses as of 2 July, ~8 a.m. ET, per Goal, Sports Mole and RMC.)
The odds
As of roughly 8 a.m. ET on 2 July, the 90-minute market reads about Switzerland 2.02, draw 3.10, Algeria 3.94. That is close to a pick-’em with a lean to the Swiss — the market’s read that Switzerland’s group-topping structure edges Algeria’s flair, but not by much, and certainly not enough to trust blindly in a single knockout game.
Vancouver conditions and viewing
BC Place has a retractable roof, but for this tournament it’s being treated as effectively open-air with no full climate control, and Vancouver’s forecast is cool and showery — roughly 12–16°C with rain around the late kickoff. Damp, cool conditions tend to help the more organised side keep its shape, which nudges the edge back toward Switzerland. For West-Coast fans this is an 8 p.m. PT watch — genuine primetime — while in the East it’s a late one at 11 p.m. ET, technically spilling toward the early hours in Europe (some European listings even file it under 3 July; it’s the same game). If you’re going in person, our BC Place Vancouver guide has the details.
My read
Switzerland are the more complete team and the conditions suit a disciplined side, so I make them deserved favourites — but 2.02 in a first-ever meeting, against a coach who knows their DNA better than anyone, is not a number I’d pile into. If Amoura is ruled out, Switzerland to advance firms up considerably; if he plays, Algeria’s counter keeps the draw and the upset live. My lean is Switzerland to progress but the tie to stay tight — a low-scoring 90 minutes, penalties not out of the question. For Canadian viewers with a rooting interest: if you wanted to see the team that beat Les Rouges given a real test, Petković may just provide it.
