France vs Spain — the “final before the final” in Dallas
Of all the ties this tournament could have thrown up in the last four, this is the one the neutrals wanted. France, the outright favourites, meet reigning European champions Spain at AT&T Stadium in Arlington/Dallas on Tuesday 14 July, 3 p.m. ET / noon PT, live on CTV, TSN and RDS for Canadian viewers. Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente called it "a final before the final," and it is hard to argue: it is only their second-ever World Cup meeting — the first since France won a 2006 Round of 16 classic 3–1. France chase a third consecutive World Cup final; Spain chase a first final since their 2010 title. Here is the read for Canadian bettors.

France: the most complete side left
Deschamps’ France are the team to beat, and the numbers back it: 16 goals scored, 2 conceded, and clean sheets in all three knockout ties on a 6-match winning run. Mbappé leads the Golden Boot race (level with Messi on 8), and Olise has a tournament-leading 6 assists. Reaching the Final would give Deschamps a third straight World Cup final as manager, and he is set to take charge of his 26th World Cup match, surpassing Helmut Schön’s record.
The concern is fitness. Aurélien Tchouaméni is a major doubt with a thigh muscle issue that has kept him out of the last two matches. Mbappé picked up an ankle knock against Morocco — he was withdrawn on 77′ — but said afterwards he was "completely fine" and is expected to start. Manu Koné was a precautionary substitution against Morocco and is available. All yellow cards were wiped after the quarter-finals, so France carry no suspensions into the semi.
Predicted France XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Koundé, Upamecano, Saliba, Digne; Koné, Rabiot; Dembélé, Olise, Doué; Mbappé.
Spain: unbeaten in 36 and chasing history
Spain arrive unbeaten in 36 matches — one short of Argentina’s all-time record of 37 — and have lost just one of their last 27 major-tournament games since 2018. They beat Belgium 2–1 in the quarters on a Merino winner, though that also ended their tournament-long clean-sheet run: it was the first goal they had conceded all tournament. As reigning Euro champions reaching a first World Cup semi since their 2010 title, this is a side built to win these games.
On the injury front the news is largely good: Yéremy Pino is fit — the feared collarbone fracture was only an acromioclavicular sprain, and he is cleared. Nico Williams (thigh/groin) is a doubt after a late cameo against Belgium, and Víctor Muñoz (calf) is a bench option at best. Like France, Spain carry no suspensions after the card wipe.
Predicted Spain XI (4-2-3-1): Simón; Porro, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Fabián; Yamal, Olmo, Baena; Oyarzabal.
The odds: France favourite, Spain a fair live price
Single-book pricing via media (ESPN/FanDuel), 13 July morning ET:
| Market | Selection | Odds (decimal) | Aggregator | As of (ET) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SF1 1X2 (90 min) | France | 2.35 | ESPN / FanDuel via ESPN | 2026-07-13 AM |
| SF1 1X2 (90 min) | Draw | 3.20 | ESPN / FanDuel via ESPN | 2026-07-13 AM |
| SF1 1X2 (90 min) | Spain | 3.20 | ESPN / FanDuel via ESPN | 2026-07-13 AM |
On the "to advance" market France are around −148 and Spain +120 — reflecting the same lean, with extra time and penalties in play.
Angles worth a look beyond the straight 1X2:
- Under on total goals. France have three knockout clean sheets; Spain conceded once all tournament. Two elite, controlled defences argue for a low-scoring, cagey semi — any total set around 2.5 leans under.
- Draw at 90 minutes (3.20). With both defences this tight and a Final place on the line, a stalemate into extra time is very live at that price.
- Mbappé anytime scorer. If he starts and is truly “completely fine,” the Golden Boot co-leader against a Spain side who just lost their shutout is a reasonable volume play.
- France to advance rather than to win the tie in 90. The cleaner expression if you fancy France but expect a tight, extra-time-friendly game.
Weather, venue and the roof question
AT&T Stadium has a retractable roof, and in mid-July Texas heat that roof is typically closed with the air conditioning running — so on-field conditions should be climate-controlled regardless of the outdoor forecast. For the record, the outdoor picture is partly sunny, a high near 90°F with a heat index around 97°F, and a 40% chance of showers or thunderstorms. The final roof call is made close to kickoff, but neither side should be at the mercy of the heat the way open-pitch venues have been this tournament.
The Canadian read
For Canadian viewers the window could hardly be better: 3 p.m. ET is a mid-afternoon watch in Toronto, Montréal and Halifax, and noon PT is a lunch-hour tune-in in Vancouver and Calgary. Bell Media has the exclusive Canadian rights, and this semi airs free-to-air on CTV (no subscription needed), with TSN in English and RDS in French for Québec. France and Spain both draw big Canadian audiences — the French-Canadian pull toward Les Bleus is real, and Spain’s tiki-taka generation has a following coast to coast. This is the connoisseur’s semi, and it slots neatly into a Canadian Tuesday afternoon.
My read
France are the right favourite, but 2.35 is not generous for a game this even against the reigning European champions. Spain at 3.20 is a fair live price, and with two of the tournament’s meanest defences meeting, I lean under on goals and rate the draw at 90 (3.20) a genuine value angle given how these sides control games. France’s fitness — Tchouaméni’s thigh, Mbappé’s ankle — nudges me further off the short price. If you want France, take them to advance rather than to win in 90. Overall: a tight France edge, but by less than the outright market implies.
- France 2.35, draw 3.20, Spain 3.20 — ESPN/FanDuel via ESPN, 13 July morning ET.
- Only the second-ever WC meeting (France won the last, a 2006 R16, 3–1); de la Fuente calls it “a final before the final.”
- France: 16 for, 2 against, three KO clean sheets — but Tchouaméni a major doubt (thigh) and Mbappé managing an ankle knock.
- Spain: unbeaten in 36, reigning Euro champions; Pino fit, Nico Williams a doubt.
- Canadian viewing: 3 p.m. ET / noon PT, CTV free-to-air (also TSN, RDS in French). Roof likely closed — climate-controlled pitch.
